“My paintings are deliberately chosen as clearly recognisable landscape or seascapes. My purpose is to draw peoples attention to the scene and closer to the canvas where any apparent detail dissolves, and colour, technique and texture emerge.
While people seeing my work on a small scale - on social media or in print are convinced it’s ‘amazingly’ detailed, I’m still following my interest into how the brain perceives and interprets what we see, and how I can adopt more textures and techniques to exploit this unusual trait!"
“Mae fy lluniau diweddaraf o fôrluniau a thirluniau wedi eu dewis yn fwriadol gan eu bod yn hawdd i’w lleoli a’u hadnabod. Fy mwriad yw tynnu sylw pobl at yr olygfa a’u denu’n nes at y gynfas fel bo manylion amlwg y llun yn ymdoddi i amlygu lliw, techneg, a gwead y gwaith.
Tra bo pobl sy’n gwel fy ngwaith yn llai na’u maint go iawn - mewn print neu ar wefannau cymdeithasol - yn rhyfeddu at eu manylder rwy’n parhau â diddordeb yn sut mae’r ymenydd cloriannu a dehonglir hyn wêl y llygaid a sut y gallaf fantesio ar deithi’r meddwl fel hyn drwy ymestyn gwead a thechnegau fy lluniau."
"A Landscape painting can often be perceived as a ‘still life’, but to sit or stand in a landscape for many hours you become aware of the constant movement of trees, grasses, clouds, light, shadows and reflections.
It’s my wish to emulate that movement using brushwork, fingers, palette knife or anything else to hand, and to let people see how paint can be used.”
"Yn aml ystyrir tirlun fel rhywbeth llonydd a di-fywyd ond wrth eistedd neu sefyll am oriau’n gwylio tirwedd dewch yn ymwybodol o symudiadau cyson y coed, y gwair, y cymylau, y golau a’r adlewyrchiadau.
Fy ngobaith yw gallu efelychu’r symudiadau hyn trwy gyfrwng brwsh, y bysedd a’r gyllell ‘palette’ (neu beth bynnag arall sydd wrth law) gan adael i bobl weld sut mae modd defnyddio paent”.

Through a period of illness during which I was unable to paint , I turned to digital photography to fulfill my creative urges. This inevitably led to using computers to edit, crop and shape the images I had captured.. As my stamina gradually returned I discovered a renewed interest in the landscape around me, and started producing work in mixed media through a long and intense process of digital manipulation and paint. Coming in for some critiscism as 'cheating' by other artists, I retuned to the more traditional method of oil painting. I still use the camera as the foundation for all my work, and by creating a series of studies in paint , work up to a large canvas - shaping a traditional subject fit for modern expectations.
Russ is married to his long term partner 'Jennie' who is a life model for art classes, the subject matter for several of his works, and an emerging artist herself.
