''Through a period of  illness during which I was unable to paint because of a lack of concentration and stamina, I turned to photography to fulfill my creative urges. Having studied traditional photographic techniques at college in my teens, the versatility of the digital camera combined with computer technology was an absolute revelation which has not only inspired me to change the subject matter I now pursue, but also the method and approach which I now apply to my painting.
Previously I had chosen to use a very detailed form of small scale watercolour paintings, while now I feel free to embark on much larger works using oil paint and other media. I relish the texture and vibrancy which oil paint can convey, and this forms the starting point of my series of 'studies'.

While a 'Study' may imply that a work is 'rough' or not finished, the sequence of paintings I've chosen to portray are each a very definite and concise approach to 'technique', 'texture', 'light' or composition, and as such may have even more relevance in their forethought than the final 'finished' work while still fulfilling their role as 'affordable art'
Russ is married to his long term partner 'Jennie' who is a life model for art classes, and who is the subject matter for several of his works.
Russ is also an established musician, and along with his good friend Andy form the band www.rundogrun.co.uk
